Reaching Your Favorite People Faster
The most immediately useful change is an overhaul of how quickly Pixel users can reach their favorite contacts. On Pixel 6 and later devices, new widget options let people call or text a VIP contact straight from the home screen, skipping the step of opening a separate app first. It’s the kind of change that sounds minor on paper but adds up in daily use, especially for anyone who regularly contacts the same small circle of people throughout the day.
Badges That Flag Urgent Messages at a Glance
Paired with the widget update, Google is introducing new notification badges specifically for VIP contacts. These badges make it possible to instantly see whether an unread message is from someone marked as a favorite, and whether that message has been flagged as urgent — all without unlocking the phone or opening the messaging app. Together with the home screen shortcuts, this update creates a clearly separated, faster path to a user’s most important relationships.
Scam Detection Now Watches More Than Just Messages
Fraud protection is getting a significant expansion in this release. Scam Detection can now flag suspicious or potentially fraudulent messages across a range of chat apps, surfacing the warning directly in a user’s notifications rather than requiring them to be inside Google’s own Messages app. For US users specifically, that protection extends even further, with Scam Detection built directly into the Gboard keyboard itself — giving it visibility into potential scam content across virtually any app where text gets typed or received.

This expanded Scam Detection rollout covers nine markets: the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and France. Rolling a safety feature out this broadly and simultaneously, rather than testing it in a single country first, signals how seriously Google is treating scam and fraud messaging as a cross-market problem rather than a region-specific one.
Wear OS 7 Lands on Pixel Watch 5
Pixel Watch 5 owners get a substantial update of their own with Wear OS 7. The centerpiece is a more personalized version of Gemini that now works offline, meaning the assistant remains usable even without an internet connection — a genuinely practical improvement for runners, hikers, or anyone exercising somewhere with spotty coverage. GPS route tracking accuracy has also been improved, addressing one of the more common complaints from fitness-focused smartwatch users who depend on precise distance and pace data.
Gemini Goes Offline, and Gestures Get Smarter
Beyond the assistant upgrade, Wear OS 7 expands the Pixel Watch’s one-handed gesture system. A double-pinch gesture from the watch face now opens the notification center, and that same gesture can scroll through Gemini’s responses, move through cards in Google Wallet, or cycle between reviews inside Google Maps. Eligible users in ten countries — the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan, and Australia — also receive two free months of Audible as part of the same promotion, giving this otherwise utility-focused update a lighter, more fun addition alongside the safety and connectivity improvements.
Rollout Timing and Device Requirements
Eligibility differs depending on the specific feature. The favorite contacts improvements, notification badges, and Harry Potter customization packs all require a Pixel 6 or newer. The Wear OS 7 update, by contrast, is exclusive to the Pixel Watch 5, leaving older Pixel Watch models without this particular set of improvements. As with previous Pixel Feature Drops, the rollout is staggered rather than instant, so eligible devices may take a few days to actually receive the update after Google’s announcement.
